Women in Technical Professions

Technical careers are no longer exclusively the domain of men – and that includes at Wascosa! In our exciting stories, women show how they succeed in technical roles and what excites them about their work. Be inspired and become part of our team that is shaping the future of rail freight transport.

Ruzica Cacic, Fleet- and Transportmanagement

I have been working at Wascosa in Lucerne since 2012 in a part time position, currently 40%. In my current role, I am responsible for the scrapping of old or heavily damaged wagons, as well as checking where the nearest scrapping workshop is, and which parts can still be used. I come from the internal sales department of a steel production company and had to overcome some hurdles in the beginning. Twelve years ago, it was not easy for me to assert myself in a male-dominated world. Today much has changed. I started in support and was able to develop internally into a technical customer advisor. My colleagues have always supported me very well along the way.

Sonja Steinmann-Albas, Technical Customer Advisor

I have been working at Wascosa in Lucerne since 2023. I take care of customer's wagons, such as repairs, inspections, or complaints. It is a very diverse job. Before this, I was with another company in the same role. I acquired my technical knowledge at a freight forwarding company for tank containers. Through workshop visits and wagon training, my knowledge has steadily expanded over time.

Patricia Simonet, Technical Customer Support

I have been working for Wascosa from France since 2024. In my current role, I collaborate closely with various departments such as Sales, Accounting, Fleet Management, and more. Externally, I maintain communication with customers, workshops, and railway undertakings. My primary responsibility is to manage our customers’ wagon fleets to ensure maximum availability. Initially, I oversaw the configuration and publication of event sales. I was approached directly by a competitor in the railway transport sector. As a newcomer in this industry, I had to prove myself, and this challenge only strengthened my resolve.

Irmhild Saabel, Head of Business Development & Technology / Member of the Management Board

Wascosa has been a part of my journey for 19 years. My responsibilities include maintenance development, technical field service, safety management, and the construction of new wagons. I have been interested in technology since I was a child. After completing my degree in mechanical engineering, I worked for 10 years at Deutsche Bahn. There are always challenges to face, no matter where you are. I have found that focussing on my objectives has been crucial in overcoming them. Everything is achievable!

Vjollca Aliu-Sopi, Team Leader Fleet & Transport Management

I have been with Wascosa in Lucerne since 2019. My journey started through a temporary placement for a planned fixed-term position. Soon after, I was offered a role as a Technical Customer Support Representative. Over time, I experienced a few role changes until I arrived at my current position. In addition to my role, I also manage the team and oversee the planning of overhauls for our entire international wagon fleet. Coming from a market research background, I have successfully established myself in this technical field through patience and determination.

Ardijana Serifovic, Technical Customer Support

I have been with Wascosa in Lucerne since 2020. I came to Wascosa through a temporary placement agency and subsequently received an offer for a permanent position. My responsibility lies in managing the wagons, ensuring that the requirements are met and that the wagons are returned to the customer as quickly as possible. Prior to this, I worked in the road transport industry and had to familiarise myself with topics such as the GCU (General Contract of Use for Wagons). Internal training, workshop visits, and, of course, my colleagues have all helped me navigate the railway sector.

Patrizia Fischer-Ferraro, Assistant Business Development – New Construction

My ‘railway career’ began with a job offer in Ticino, which led me from an energy cost auditing office to Hupac. I have been working for Wascosa in Lucerne since 2009. I was keen to return to German-speaking Switzerland and, on the recommendation of Hupac, I applied for a job at Wascosa. Shortly afterwards, I was able to count myself among the ‘Wascosians’. My main tasks at Wascosa include data maintenance and document management for new-build vehicles and registering them with the relevant authorities. Thanks to training and the support of my colleagues, I have successfully familiarised myself with this specialist area.

Simone Hülsemann, Regress Management - Auditor

I have been working at Wascosa in Hamburg since 2022. My role involves assessing damages and obtaining the resulting costs from the appropriate parties. Additionally, I visit workshops to conduct supplier monitoring. Prior to this, I spent nearly 20 years in the automotive industry. I made a conscious decision to transition to rail freight transport, seeking a more sustainable and future-oriented path. In this industry, there is a strong sense of community. I can learn from experienced individuals who are eager to share their knowledge with me.

Melike Gulger, Technical Customer Support – STV Team Leader

I have been working at Wascosa from France since 2023. I provide support to our customers and maintain technical data, a role I have held for 13.5 years, even prior to joining Wascosa. I originally aspired to become a primary school teacher, but fate had other plans for me. With the support of my colleagues, I have been able to grow and develop my career.
